Mater Ecclesia's drama group began in April of 2008 and presented their first production "Monologues from the Crucifixion" for the older students, and "Recitations by Little Angels" for the younger group. We resumed classes in November of 2008 for students from ten years of age up, with classes in improvisation, mime, and stage make-up, along with various stage techniques, stage directions, stage terms, and the promise of our 2009 production of "Little Women". Auditions with cold readings from a script of "Little Women" were held December 20th with assistance from Mr. Lee Lanterman, a guest speaker to our group that day. Mr. Lanterman's credentials include teaching drama and directing numerous plays over the course of "many" years at the Sketch Club Players in Woodbury and with the St. James Players in Pitman. Mr. Lanterman's "sixth sense" as a director proved to be right on target with his choices for our cast! It's evident that his visions for each of our students were correct because everyone is doing beautifully in their assigned task. Along with an hour of learning each week, we are currently rehearsing for the play during the second hour of class on Tuesday afternoons at Mater Ecclesiae, and we will continue to update this site with photos and news of our "dramatic accomplishments". Hopefully, we will be prepared to present our play in June with all the hard work that our students have been putting into their rehearsals. Our patron saint is Saint Genesius, who was an actor during the time of the Emperor Diocletian. He was martyred after he declared his Christian beliefs while on stage performing for a Pagan audience. That's our brief history, so stay tuned to this site to follow our progress. We aren't ALL work either - we're having a lot of fun while we learn! "Saint Genesius, pray for us!" Linda Hasson |
